In 2012 the Virginia High School League voted to use a new classification system for the purpose of determining champions for athletics and activities. This change to six classifications grouped schools together by similar enrollments. After using a conference system for four years, a new system was adopted which formed four regions for each classification (1-6) in the state. The regions are grouped together by enrollment and location. In the Fall of 2019 there will be 16 high schools competing in Region 4B. These schools are located as far North as Culpeper County and Spotsylvania County, and as far South Richmond City and Dinwiddie County.
